TITLE:          The Doha Development Agenda and Southern Agriculture

ABSTRACT: Most nations of the world continue the multilateral-trade negotiation process through the Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organization. In addition to the agenda items that focus on market access for agricultural products and the desire to reign in domestic agricultural support, much has been made of the potential impacts of the WTO on farmers in both developed and developing countries. The current status of the negotiations, the consideration of the potential distributional impacts of the negotiating round, and perspective from the developing countries will be presented in this symposium. Lessons learned from recent experiences in free trade will be highlighted, examined, and discussed, and the implications for applied research and extension education.
